The Currency Lab – Screening
In the current exhibition Accumulation - on collecting, growth and excess, Elom 20ce (Togo), Musquiqui Chihying (Taiwan) & Gregor Kasper (Germany) are showing several works from the long-term project THE CURRENCY. The project deals with one of the world's largest e-waste recycling centres in Agbogbloshie (Accra, Ghana).
As an extension of the project, the artists are presenting a new work from their ‘Sensing’ series: with a film screening followed by a discussion.
Ladipo, West Africa's largest market for used car spare parts, is located in the centre of the Nigerian metropolis of Lagos. There, a character wearing a traditional Egungun mask makes his way through the crowded, narrow streets of the market and uses various microphones to explore the sounds of the market. Among the Yoruba, the Egungun are mediators between the worlds. They have access to the sounds and voices of the afterlife and can translate them for the people in this reality. In ‘Sensing 2 Ladipo’, the performance of this spiritual practice is interwoven with the questioning of the technological, economic, ecological and social entanglements of the global automotive industry.
In addition, a selection of research interviews conducted with traders and workers in the market will be screened.
