Elephants & Squirrels (Gregor Brändli, Switzerland, 2025, 114 min.)

During her research in Swiss museums, Sri Lankan artist Deneth Piumakshi Veda Arachchige uncovers ancestral remains and cultural objects belonging to an indigenous Sri Lankan community Wanniyala-Aetto, brought to Basel over a century ago by Swiss naturalists. Decades after Sri Lanka's first restitution demands were refused, Deneth and community chief Uru Warige Wannila Aththo set out to finally bring them home. The film confronts the audience with an urgent and multi-perspective reflection on ethics, power, historical responsibility, and cultural heritage.

The screening will be preceded by a conversation with film director Gregor Brändli and artist Deneth Piumakshi Veda Arachchige.
